Can a Canon EOS SLR film camera use Canon digital SLR lenses?
I’ve got an older 35 mm Canon EOS SLR. I’m seeing a lot of the 28-135mm zoom lenses on sale that come with the Canon 40D digital cameras. Can I use that lens on my film camera?
You sure can. All EF lenses can be used on both film and digital Canon cameras. The only lenses that your film camera can not use are the EFs lenses these are designed specifically for the cropped sensors on DSLR cameras. For instance many DSLR cameras come with a EFs 18-55mm lens. This would be the equivalent to the EF 28-90mm lens that comes with many film cameras.
The reason why Canon produces these EFs lenses is that because of the cropped sensor (smaller than 35mm film) the field of view is magnified by 1.6
This is great for a telephoto lens. Your 200 mm lens becomes a 320mm lens. On the wide angle end you lose out. This is why Canon has lenses like the EFs 18-55 mm and the EFs 10-22mm.
Bottom line make sure it is an EF lens and not an EFs lens and you will have no problems.

Canon Xsi Rebel – Almost Perfect
a very short review because I don’t speak English : this camera is almost perfect for a non professional user (like me) and deserves a better lens, you have to buy separately of course. the only strange behavior I have encountered is that sometimes it needs a “reboot”, but speaking of an electronic device it’s not surprising at all; also, it’s impossible to change all the parameters in full manual operation with your eye on the viewfinder.
XSi Rebel – Great Intro SLR
I switched from a point-and-shoot to this SLR about a year and a half ago and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve gotten way into photography after buying this camera. I’ll typically keep it at home if going somewhere where it will easily get spilled on or dropped (ie. bars, etc.), but for more events and photo ops it’s wonderful. It does take a little getting used to it’s size if you’re moving from a point-and-shoot to an SLR for the first time, but it is well worth the switch! When I purchased the Canon XSi Rebel, I was deciding between this one and a Nikon equivalent. After playing with both of them, I ended up going with the Canon – the buttons are placed better and the features you get for the value were better in my opinion. Can’t go wrong!
XSi Rebel – Camera Good, Software Bad
My wife has used a Canon SLR for a number of years, so a Canon EOS was the logical choice when purchasing a digital camera as it uses the same lens.
The Camera takes excellent photos and operates very similarly to the film model, only better in many ways.
I would have rated it five stars, but…
So far, it’s been impossible to transfer images from the camera to the computer. We managed to transfer one, but that was it. Other images simply will not transfer. The software doesn’t recognize, and refuses to connect to, the camera. Even after reloading the software and trying on a different computer. The Canon help line was absolutely no help! NONE!!! They insist it must be a “computer problem” as “no one else has ever had this problem”.
Consequently, we must take the memory card to the in-store developer-kiosk and transfer images there, which requires two trips.
The camera is great and does everything she wanted, but the software and the Canon help desk are worthless!
