Why do dslr and slr’s produce better pictures?

I have a new digital camera, CanonPowershot sx110, and it doesn’t have nearly as sharp pictures as a regular film camera or DSLR. How come dslrs/slrs always have sharper, crisper, nicer pictures?

Because they have larger lenses that project larger image circles over larger sensors. The sensor in a full-frame digital camera is about an inch and a half wide. If you want to make a 12×8 print, the image only needs to be enlarged eight and a half times. If you made the same print with an sx110, you’d need to enlarge it about 50 times. That is what makes all the difference.

AMPhoto: Relative to a lens designed for 35mm, the optics in P&S cameras are *outstanding*, precisely because they are so compact. It is easier many times over to make a sharp lens at that size, but due to the higher pixel density of P&S sensors, they need to resolve detail over a commensurately smaller scale. In short, they need to be sharper.
