Learning how to drive a golf ball effectively is probably one of the most frustrating parts of the game of golf. Golfers are always trying to find ways to get more distance and to correct problems (a slice or a hook) off the tee. Understanding proper body mechanics and putting your body motions together in an effective way is key in hitting long and straight. This article will provide you with several important tips on driving a golf ball more effectively.
Step #1 You need a good grip when learning how to drive a golf ball. Grip the club firmly but gently so that you can make nice solid contact on the upswing. You just need to hold on to the club firmly and remember that it is not a hammer! Pretend you are holding a small bird. You want to keep the bird in your hands, but you do not want to crush it. Your grip pressure is very important in learning how to drive a golf ball.
Step #2 Your stance should be shoulder width apart and your feet should point out slightly. Have your arms hang down naturally from your body and put the club face behind the ball. Before you take a swing, be sure to see if your shoulders are hunched over or if you feel tension in your arms. If you do then you are probably standing too close to the ball. You want to feel as if you have about 60 percent body weight on your right leg. Make sure your spine is straight and slightly bend your knees feeling athletic and well balanced. Step #3 The next step in understanding how to drive a golf ball is the all-important swing. A good golf swing involves a fluid, easy motion with your back facing the target in the back swing and your follow-through complete. It is important you keep your feet planted and body balanced throughout your swing. Most problems with understanding how to drive a golf ball are caused by a quick takeaway in the back swing and then followed by not enough acceleration through the ball. You cannot learn how to drive a golf ball if you do not have a relaxed and fluid swing.
Step #4 I can hear the little league baseball coach in me saying, “keep your eye on the ball!” Never, ever take your eyes off the ball during your entire swing.
