MY FRIEND KNOCKED MY CANON XTI ON THE FLOOR AND MY LENS IS . . .?

It was on a small tripod on the table. My friend turned over to get her phone, and knocked it to the floor. It was a hardwood floor. The camera, as I can tell, is alright. The lens. . .not so much.
It goes from 18-55.
Well, now it only goes from 34-55 and it doesn’t move past 34.
So I have no wide angle.
If I let somebody take a picture with my camera, they would have never known it was dropped. So the lens is okay in the sense of it not being shattered, it still takes pretty good pictures, but it’s stuck.
I will not force it.
And I will be taking it to ritz camera where I know some of the people, and they will be able to help me.

I had a Nikon fall 3 feet to the floor (carpet) and nothing broke. I’m not saying Nikon’s are more durable than Canon’s, because I know NOTHING about that, but I just thought the story might belong here after Galan’s comments.
Anyhow… If you recall, your lens would get longer near EACH end of the focal range and shrink as you got near the middle of the range. That’s also just a silly observation, but it explains why your lens can’t get into the wide angle end any more.
Obviously, the lens has some kind of gear mechanism broken inside. The kit lens is cheap enough that you might find it’s cheaper to buy a new lens rather than fix this one. Well, as long as you are going to buy a new lens anyhow, maybe it’s time for a slight upgrade?
I’m just sayin’……..
The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) (July 2008-$515) is a good “walk around” lens at a good price.
